Workout Series: Yoga, A Beginner's Guide

Updated: Jun 5

Lately I've been dealing with a lot of stress. I find that working out really helps me alleviate that. I normally do cardio or strength training. However, I've noticed even after exercise I still feel a bit off. After doing some online research, I've decided to try out a few yoga stretches. I am by no means perfect and after trying a few moves I quickly realized I really need to stretch more often. Some of the moves were a bit difficult for me. However, I know with more time and practice I will get better. Plus, when this pandemic is over I may join a class-but for now I will utilize YouTube to the fullest. Warning: Please consult a healthcare professional before starting any new exercises.

According to American Osteopathic Association yoga has many many benefits to the mind and body. Yoga’s incorporation of meditation and breathing can help improve a person’s mental well-being. The techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome. I personally suffer with chronic neck and back pain so it's a no-brainer to start incorporating yoga into my work out routine.

Check out these yoga beginner poses I found on the internet from YogaRove You can also print this free guide off their blog!

In order to stretch into an asana or yoga pose you need the proper clothing to do so. Astoria Activewear is the perfect choice for this. The leggings are thick and durable. They are made out of a nylon and spandex blend and most importantly they are seamless. There is ribbed detailing down each leg and around the waistband. There is moderate scrunch around the butt which really makes your butt pop! The leggings really accentuate your curves without sacrificing functionality. Plus the lemon color is so rich and vibrant. When I received them, I was concerned that the color would show EVERYTHING-but it doesn't. The crop top doubles as a sports bra and has removable padding. The mesh panel is breathable and kept me cool while trying to find my balance with the standing poses. I love the design in the back as well. You’re probably wondering about the sizes. My recommendation is to review the size chart. These items are designed to hug the body really tight and you might feel uncomfortable with the fit. One downside I will say is the shipping took fuh-eva *cardi's voice* I am not sure if it's because of the effects of COVID-19. When I reached out to them about the status of my order, I received prompt replies. Even though it took a few weeks for my items to arrive, I would highly recommend Astoria. I purchased my yoga mat a few years ago from TJMaxx. They are a bit cheaper there than your standard sports store. My microfiber yoga towel is from Gaiam. It covers your mat to absorb sweat and protect against slipping while you move from pose to pose. It absorbs twice as much as cotton and dries in half the time. Perfect for hot yoga! I like the fact that it fits into the four corners of your mat to reduce sliding. It is designed to fit most standard yoga mats which are 24"W by 68"L but I recommend double checking the dimensions of yours before purchasing. My yoga bag is from Gaiam too. I love the fact that it's very roomy and I can carry both my mat and my yoga towel through the top straps. You can purchase these same items on my

We can't forget the Apple Watch! This was gifted to me and I absolutely love it. It helps me stay on track with various apps. I really like the Breathe App and the Activity App. Which ones are your favorites?
